Child Safe Window Treatments
If you have a baby on the way you have probably been trying to make the whole house child safe, but one place that often gets forgotten when child proofing a house are the blinds. Some window coverings are extremely dangerous for kids who can strangle themselves on strings among other ways of injuring themselves. There are luckily some blinds that are child safe , or that have child safety precautions. There is only so much information you can gather on the internet, so if you get it down to a few different styles of blinds, go to a local window treatment show floor and talk to one of the experienced sales people. They may have better ideas, or be able to cut some items off the list.
Do not get any blinds with long strings as these have the most obvious child safety concerns. If you insist on having a string you can find some blinds with a breakaway string that will come off if the kid gets too tangled in it. There are better solutions to the problem though. You can get cordless blinds that you turn by hand, or you can get motorized blinds that raise and lower the blinds on a timer or the click of a button. These can also look more elegant than blinds with a string. These blinds come in a variety of colors and types and you will have to do some research to decide what type will look best in the rooms you are placing them in.
Another concern to think about is that if the kid is going to be crashing about the house soon, he is going to be crashing into everything and this includes the windows. If you like shutters, or wooden blinds this can be a problem because they are fairly likely to break when crashed into. Think instead of getting blinds that are harder to break and won’t splinter when they do. There are faux wooden blinds, aluminum blinds and a number of cloth blinds that are very sturdy. If you do get an alternative to shutters , it can be an ideal situation as they won’t need anything for opening and closing.
