Forgiveness

How is it that we find forgiveness? We speak of forgiveness as being a virtue. That being able to forgive is healing, but what if we never got to forgiveness because we never judged? For there to be forgiveness there has to be judgement. If I have not judged a behavior or action as bad or wrong I have no need to forgive. To forgive the person doing the forgiving comes from a superior point of view. I am better than you therefore I have the ability to pass judgement on you and then can conclude that you are wrong and then forgive you. I contend we need to work toward teaching that acceptance is the accepted behavior and that forgiveness should be reserved for the self. I.e. I forgive myself for passing judgement on someone else and thinking I can forgive them. The height of arrogance would be the idea that I have the ability to judge you and your behaviors. We could be creating a world of acceptance instead of judgement. Where understanding there are difference between us and that is OK, that those differences are not something to be judged and then forgiven. We can take on this thinking where ever we happen to be in our offices, at temple or at a Mauritius luxury hotel. The movement away for tolerance I believe to be important. Understanding that the subtle or overt act of judgement isn’t ours or our business. We can relieve ourselves of a lot of stress and tension by acceptance. Acceptance equals understanding – understanding there are differences between us where tolerance equals judgement – lack of understanding that there are differences and the belief that my way, my beliefs are right and other beliefs are wrong. Can we focus on acceptance? Can we move toward understanding? I think do however I think we need to move away from tolerance too.
