Refined Colors in Kuala Lumpur

When the world traveler is heading toward Asia and looking for the perfect luxury hotel, Kuala Lumpur has some very exciting options.  Being one of the most diverse places, with a fantastic urban scene along with really splendid natural wonders, there are lots of adventures here that will keep the whole family happy.  The hotels are a splendid combination of innovation and tradition, with state of the art technology mixed in with Malaysian hospitality, which is like none other in the world.  The sense of design in the hotel and in the rooms is bound to be impeccable, as Kuala Lumpur’s history as an international city has not changed, and it remains one of the most stylish places in the world.

It is also one of the most culturally rich places in Asia, with a strong mix of traditions and languages, keeping the local performing arts scene very lively and constantly evolving.  There are theaters here whose roots are fairly new, and others who have long roots in Malaysia’s past.  Likewise with music and dance, where tradition is constantly meeting new forms and ideas.  KL also attracts a good number of tours, because of its central location and population who support live art, and some really exciting work comes through the city.  One of the most recent works to cause a lot of local buzz was a work of experimental dance called Refined Colors.

This was a tour that was a joint production by Kyoto’s dumbtype and Monochrome Circus.  Both groups are based in Japan, and in the course of the tour, they would collect images and video from each city, and KL was fortunate to be on their route.  Sponsored here by the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, the entire performance was lit by LED lights.  This experiment where technology meets live performance is nothing new to Japan’s dumbtype.  Their work, which began in 1984, has a solid reputation for mixing state of the art technologies into their amazing and stunning dance works.  It is like dance, but really a blend of dance, technology, theatre, and performance art in one form.  Stylistically brilliant and thematically profound, their work is extremely forward-looking, and KL is the perfect place to see it.
