Inventors, idea people, if you have come up with a stellar idea to change the world and make it a better place to be in, you should protect that idea right? Well, truth is that you don’t have to file a patent immediately if you come up with an idea or develop a product.

That is good because it allows for an inventor to test the market and see if the market responds well to their idea.

The only downfall of not getting a patent right away is that you may have to deal with people or others who will imitate your product.  But, patents are quite expensive so you might not have the funds to get one right away. The United States Department of Justice recently brought charges against rabbis in Brooklyn, NY and New Jersey.  This followed and investigation into the bribery and corruption of several New Jersey politicians.  The investigation led to the money laundering crimes that were allegedly being committed by these rabbis, who were arrested on Thursday.  This FBI investigation, titled Operation Bid Rig, has been on-going for the last ten years.  The focus has been on the corruption and the bribery, but with the assistance of a witness they uncovered an international network of money laundering, which broadened their investigation.  The witness, Solomon Dwek, is the son of one of the accused rabbi’s.  He was also arrested for fraud in 2006.  Upon his arrest over eighty banks, companies, and individuals claimed that they were owed more than three hundred million dollars.

The case of the rabbis involves a network wherein the money was laundered through charities that were under the control of the rabbis.  The rabbis were given commissions on the transactions, which ranged in number from thousands to those of hundreds of thousands, and the transactions were carried out multiple times in any given week.  The sum of the money laundered is believed to be in the millions.  This was an operation that began in New Jersey and New York, but involved those in Israel as well.  One Israeli was arrested in the sting as well, Levi Deutsch.  Duetsch was the one who traveled back and forth between Israel and New York.  He was involved in the diamond industry, which became one of the sources they were using to launder the money.  This operation has been associated strongly with the international trade of diamonds, a fact that FBI investigators have been aware of for a long time.  The rabbis recently arrested in New York are just latest to have been connected to this international scheme.  Two New York rabbis were arrested in 1984, and a Los Angeles rabbi was arrested in 1994.

When a pre-existing organization with interests in public services fails to control and stop corruption, it is necessary to create agencies that will be specifically anti-corruption agencies.  One of the agencies that is considered to be one of the most successful, and was the first of its kind is the Independent Commission Against Corruption in Hong Kong. Many factors determine the success and effectiveness of such agencies, ranging from the simple feature such as having a reliable staff, to those that are a bit more complex such as the environment where the particular institution is located, to the context of the sociological and political realms.  To what extent the agency is free from the interference of the government of a location as well as the financial resources necessary to run such an agency is also of utmost importance.

In considering the size of staff necessary, one must consider the scope and the range of the corruption that they will be tackling.  The staff must be dedicated, hard-working and trustworthy.  There are many staff hired from various work background, such as those on independent contracts to management departments, to public and civil servants.  Employers will consider the integrity of the applicant first and foremost.  Without a staff of those that possess such qualities, the agency is doomed to failure, and will loose effectiveness and credibility.  Those beginning such agencies must ensure that certain staff will not hinder, or undermine the work that they are looking to succeed in performing due to lack of integral behavior.  Perspective employees often undergo a series of tests and interviews and are monitored regularly throughout their employment.

The interference of third parties in regards to the hiring and firing of employees is detrimental.  This aspect of the agency should be left to those who are in direct management, and who are not the executives that do not work with the staff on a daily basis.  Managers evaluate and experience the work of their employees all day, everyday, and are the only ones with the perspective and the work accomplished by their personnel.  This will also serve to ensure that there is no influence on the officers, and protects them from external pressures such as economic, personal or political.  The staff, once established be of the utmost importance when an agency is formed to end corruption.

This was a tour that was a joint production by Kyoto’s dumbtype and Monochrome Circus.  Both groups are based in Japan, and in the course of the tour, they would collect images and video from each city, and KL was fortunate to be on their route.  Sponsored here by the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, the entire performance was lit by LED lights.  This experiment where technology meets live performance is nothing new to Japan’s dumbtype.  Their work, which began in 1984, has a solid reputation for mixing state of the art technologies into their amazing and stunning dance works.  It is like dance, but really a blend of dance, technology, theatre, and performance art in one form.  Stylistically brilliant and thematically profound, their work is extremely forward-looking, and KL is the perfect place to see it.

Next Friday, July 19, 2009 the roadshow called “London 2012″ will be in Northumberland as part of their tour of the United Kingdom.  The goal of the show is to promote physical fitness in the youth of Northumberland day schools and schools throughout the region.  There will be an event called ‘Street Games, and everyone should attend.  The day promises to be a fun packed day, as well as educational as they will exhibit some new games for kids to take part in.  They will take into consideration the weight, height and overall fitness of each child to determine the sport that is best suited for them.

They will also encourage the kids to get out and get active, filling them in on the various facilities and clubs that are in their neighborhoods.  The chairman of the roadshow is Sebastian Coe, and he states that they are going across the country in an attempt to present to people, kids specifically, that sports are a way of finding ones own personal talents.  All of the events are free for the kids to participate in, more than one hundred and sixty kids from all areas will be able to try out basketball, tennis, archery and handball.

There are so many benefits to experience from regular exercise.  Those who begin to exercise early in life will have less of a chance of becoming over weight adults, their bones and muscles will be stronger, and regular physical decreases ones chances of diabetes.  And aside from the physical benefits, studies show that they will get better sleep at night and be better able to handle emotional or physical challenges in life.  One just feels better in general.  There are three elements to fitness that the roadshow will address, strength, flexibility and endurance.  With so many channels on the television, and so much of life taking place on the computer, the importance of getting kids involved early on in age will affect and enhance the rest of their lives.
