Goa Tries to Woo Back Tourists
The popular Indian state of Goa is facing a decline in tourism as a result of the ongoing global economic recession. One of the most exotic and popular tourist destinations in Asia, Goa is hoping to woo back the chartered tourists that are so vital to their local economy.
Comparing early 2009 numbers to the same period in 2008, chartered flights to the region were down by over ten percent, according to the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa. While some attribute part of the drop to the terrorist attack on Mumbai last November, the Minister of Tourism, Francisco Pacheco, insists that the initial drop in flights in November had rebounded later in the season.
With only two months left in the annual tourist season, Goan officials hope to lure more visitors at upcoming international trade fairs. The strategy is to solidify existing markets rather than trying to reach new audiences.
Goa is home to some incredible beaches, wonderful food, and has a great club scene. The many five and four star hotels Goa offer luxurious accommodations and the state is filled with beautiful historic architecture, traditional villages, and other appealing attractions.
